Much of the advice here is going to be tailored for zone 4 as that is where I’m based now. Some things may work for colder areas though is untested and currently my working knowledge is more suited to zone 7 gardening.
I have been gardening for many years, since 2005, and my style is geared toward permaculture, low effort and high gain, and generally working with the more natural systems. Build your soil, build your food.
My dream backyard garden has many perennials and is done organically.
I grow using organic methods like compost from excessive food waste as I have a recycling system hooked up with a restaurant, and my operation frugal. As far as seeds go I’m more the Luther Burbank style, I start a lot of plants from seed and only continue the seed line with the best performers.
Here in Minnesota (zone 4b), I am testing the boundaries of what can be grown from vegetables, fruit, flowering perennials, trees, and shrubs.
My main soil enrichment is compost in the form of vermicompost.
